HoopGroup Happening Newsletter

What’s going on in hoops? We’ll tell you! Hoop Group Happenings is back and we’re giving you up to date info every week. From recruiting advice, to instructional drills, to upcoming events and alumni info, you can find it on here.

Our Story

Since 1963, Hoop Group has been a comprehensive basketball company dedicated to fulfilling dreams of players, coaches and parents by providing the best instruction, competition and exposure.

Then the head coach at St Anthony HS, Bob Kennedy ran his 1st camp at the Trenton CYO in 1963. Almost immediately, he had the pioneering vision of creating a full summer sleep away basketball camp. A few years later, Bob and his wife Pat made the leap of faith and purchased Camp Dent Boy Scout camp in Stroudsburg, PA.

After a few early struggles, their dream became a reality as the camp began to flourish. Boys and girls from across the country came to this unique setting in the beautiful Pocono Mountains to measure their skills against great competition and learn from the nation’s best coaches.

From these pioneering roots, Hoop Group has grown to encompass almost every facet of grassroots basketball. Today our camps, clinics, leagues, tournaments and facilities are an integral part of thousands of players’ journey to college basketball and beyond. Our over 1 million alumni include a Who’s Who in basketball… From Bob Knight to Geno Auriema; from Larry Bird to Kevin Durant; from Carol Blazejowski to Sue Bird; from Magic Johnson to Karl Anthony-Towns.

Whether you are a high school All-American or just a young player just starting out, Hoop Group has a program for You!

Kyle Young Learning A Lot From New AAU Team – HG Insider Q&A

The Jersey Shore Warriors are a well known and prestigious program in the New Jersey and Pennsylvania area. The program seemingly finds a way to regularly play in the Final Four of Hoop Group Jam Fests. Additionally, the program does a tremendous job of developing smart, fundamental basketball players. Next on that list is Bethlehem Catholic’s Kyle Young. At 6’9, Young is beginning to receive Division 1 offers thanks to his ability to own the glass and control the paint. Coming out of the Spring Jam Fest, Young received offers from both Lafayette and Marist, and that’s just the beginning.

Young caught up with Hoop Group Insider on Saturday night to discuss his Spring, playing for a program rich in tradition, and who he thinks should be Rookie of the Year in the NBA.

Q: What do you think your team has done best this Spring?

A: I don’t know really. We’ve played tough, but we kind of lost it last weekend in Pitt, and tonight. I think we rebounded well and moved the ball well as a group, though.

Q: What’s it like playing for a program with the tradition of the Jersey Shore Warriors?

A: It’s great. In my short time here, they’ve really developed me into a next level player. We get along really well and have a lot of chemistry on the court. That doesn’t really happen a lot on most AAU teams. But here, you really build a relationship.

Q: What’s the best piece of advice or tip Coach (Tony) Sagona has given you?

A: He’s told me a lot. Like, not every shot is going to fall, but if I’m always staying active, things will work out positively on the court.

Q: You recently received your second offer from Mount Saint Mary’s…what are some of the things colleges like about your game?

A: A lot of the school’s I’ve been talking to like how active I am, and how I am on the glass. They keep telling me to continue to develop in the post and just keep working.

Q: Who is your pick to win the NBA Finals?

A: I really don’t know. I watched a little yesterday, I watched Utah. I have some faith in Utah and how they’re playing.

Q: What do you think of Donovan Mitchell’s Rookie Year?

A: It’s crazy. Just, really crazy. He’s playing like he’s been in the league for a few years, and that’s rare to see.

Q: Would he be your Rookie of the Year?

A: Yes, definitely.

Q: If the Jersey Shore Warriors were to have a 3-point shooting contest, where do you finish?

A:  Uhhhh probably dead last. I wish that wasn’t the answer, but that it’s a part of my game I’m still working on developing.

Q&A with DC Blue Devils point guard Bol Akot – Talks HGSL, recruiting & more

Bol Akot runs the show for the very talented DC Blue Devils (N.H.). The class of 2020 point guard is a high level athlete with a knack for getting to the rim. He did a Q&A with Hoop Group Insider on his experience in the HGSL, his AAU team and more.

Q: What’s been your mission this AAU season?

A: “My mission this season has been to put my name out there in the country, receive more offers and add new tools to my game.”

Q: The DC Blue Devils have had a great couple of years. Describe your program as a whole.

A: “Our program is basically one big family. We have each other’s backs and stick with each other through anything. We always will cheer on our younger and older teams and that’s what makes us a strong program.”

Q: For people that do not know you. How would you describe yourself on the floor?

A: “I am a flashy point guard and I’m crafty with the ball. I handle the ball well and can pull up from midrange at any moment.”

Q: What’s the latest with your recruitment?

A: “I have offers from Rutgers and St. Bonaventure and UMass Lowell is the latest school to offer. I have more interest, but my coach would know more about that.”

Q: What advice has former DC Blue Devils player and now Rutgers player Geo Baker given you about college basketball and your development?

A: “The advice that Geo has given me about college basketball is that it is no joke and when you get there it is tough, but you’ll get used to it. You can’t have distractions or be influenced. The advice about my development is not to think so much. I have to do things like kick the ball out to my team and be as vocal as possible.”

Q: How would you say the first two sessions of the HGSL went?

A: “The first two sessions were good. They had good teams and my team did well for the most part of both tournaments. The competition is good.”

Q: What are you guys trying to accomplish this AAU season?

A: “What we are trying to accomplish is to play our best basketball and prepare for a strong July live period. We want to beat any team that is against us, shoe brand or not.”

Elijah Wood shows potential in first two live periods – Talks to HG Insider on his game, recruitment and more

Class of 2020 wing Elijah Wood has made great strides since last AAU season. Wood has always been talented, but is now starting to put all of the pieces together. The Team Thrill (M.D.) prospect spoke to Hoop Group Insider on the latest with his game, recruitment and more.

Q: You’ve made great improvements in your game this past year. What have you been working on?

A: “I’ve been really focusing on my free throws and 3-pointers. I’ve been putting up 500 makes a day for the past two months, just trying to get better. That’s basically it, and getting stronger. I’ve been trying to get stronger too.”

Q: What’s next for you in terms of improvement?

A: “I’m just trying to be consistent. That’s why I’m trying to put up as many shots as possible and put as much work in so I can just feel sharp all the time. I’ve always been told to work on 3-pointers, so I’ve just been trying to work on my shot and making everything consistent and good all the time.”

Q: What schools are in the mix so far in your recruitment?

A: “South Carolina, Oregon, Kentucky, UConn, Pittsburgh, St. John’s and a couple others.”

Q: UConn has been active in recruiting since they arrived on staff. What do you think about them?

A: “They’ve been pretty active in recruiting. They’ve been telling me my flaws and all that, and I appreciate that. They’ve been helping a lot.”

Q: What would you say has helped your play on floor?

A: “I think just me being athletic and trying to get my teammates involved and everything has worked. I’m just trying to win.”

Q: What schools would you be open to visiting?

A: “Almost every one. If any college can help me get my education and fulfill my dreams then I’m happy to go on a visit.”

Q: Is there anything off the court that you have been focusing on?

A: “I’m just becoming a better man. Just trying to grow up, really.”
